Historical context

A pyxis is a lidded container. The Met records Greek examples associated with the storage of small personal items and cosmetics. That historical function explains the vessel name here; the rounded black form shown is a contemporary workshop piece.

The Attic pyxis below documents the ancient tradition of a rounded container with a separate lid. It has a flatter body and Geometric painted ornament; our raised-foot black pyxis is a contemporary interpretation of the vessel family, not a replica of this particular object.
