Two tall, upward-curving metal ornaments define the Archaic Spartan Helmet. A warm copper-toned surface, red stitched borders and small animal motifs frame its enclosed face and nose guard. Side ties add a further visible layer of handwork.

Historical context

Large horns have an archaeological precedent in Corinthian helmets. The example displayed in Geneva (HR 155), dated approximately 650 BCE and associated tentatively with Taranto, preserves a pair of bronze bull horns and ears. It provides a closer reference for this helmet's horned silhouette than an undecorated Corinthian example.

This surviving horned Corinthian helmet provides a specific archaeological comparison for the projecting horns and face opening of the Archaic Spartan Helmet. It is not evidence that the ancient object was Spartan, nor a claim that every detail of the contemporary piece reproduces this example.

Object documentation

The design concept and aesthetic direction belong to Georgios Katsos and Archaeopolis. Physical making is by Dimitris Katsikis. This is a contemporary, historically informed object. Materials, dimensions, weight, edition status and any specific archaeological model are confirmed with the workshop for each individual commission.
