Historical context
An Athenian red-figure hydria (kalpis) in the Louvre, dated around 480 BCE, depicts a helmet with a scale-patterned crown and an animal ornament on its cheek guard. It offers a comparison for the Marine Helmet’s overall facial arrangement and scale-like decoration. “Marine” is the Archaeopolis series name; a precise ancient naval attribution is not established.

The Louvre identifies the cheek ornament as a lion. The painted helmet also has a large crest, whereas the Marine Helmet has paired winged griffins and a different crown arrangement. This is an ancient visual comparison, not a confirmed exact prototype; the painted scale pattern alone does not establish how an ancient helmet was constructed.
