Historical and design context
Archaic-period inspiration, based on the horse-hindquarters shield device in Walters 48.1920, about 510 BCE. The warrior is unnamed. Manufacture of the vase in Athens does not identify the shield bearer with a city or the Peisistratid family.

The ancient shield bears the hindquarters and tail of a horse, closely comparable to the pale emblem on the Archaeopolis piece. The motif is a horse, not a winged creature. This is an iconographic comparison, not proof of identical shield construction.
