Greek and eastern Mediterranean context

Small bronze arrowheads with socketed mountings and projecting fins are documented in the Greek and Achaemenid world. The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogues 26.199.297 as a three-flanged, socketed bronze arrowhead, dated to the 6th–4th century BCE or later. Its ancient head measures 3.3 cm; this is the museum object’s measurement.

The narrow point and ridged appearance provide a useful comparison with the photographed Archaeopolis head. The complete cross-section and concealed mounting of this modern piece have not been established from the photographs, so it is not assigned to a precise three-flanged type or described as a replica of that museum object.

The British Museum’s Naukratis research record documents the circulation of trilobate types through the Near East and subsequently Greece and Egypt. Such forms belonged to a connected Mediterranean world; their shape alone does not identify the ethnicity of an archer.

The photographed object

The wooden shaft, feather colours and bindings describe the contemporary workshop object. The archaeological sources cited above concern ancient finds; they do not establish a surviving complete arrow with this exact combination of parts.
